Every settled, weedy, uneven paver patio you have walked across had the same problem: the base was too thin or never compacted. The pavers themselves almost never fail. We spend the money below grade, where it decides whether the surface is still flat in a decade.

The base is the whole job
We excavate to the depth the use actually requires — deeper for a driveway than a garden path — and compact the aggregate in lifts rather than dumping it in one go. It is unglamorous, it is most of the labour, and it is the entire difference between a patio that stays flat and one that ripples.
Water gets somewhere on purpose
With this much annual rainfall, a flat patio is a puddle. We set slope away from the house, and where a site needs it we add drainage before the surface goes down. Retrofitting drainage under a finished patio means taking the patio apart.
Edges and joints hold it together
We install proper edge restraint and polymeric jointing sand, which is what keeps pavers from spreading and weeds from establishing. Cheap installs skip both, which is why they look tired in two years.
They spent two full days on excavation and base before a single paver went down, which I confess I found frustrating at the time. Three winters later it is dead flat with no weeds in the joints, and my neighbour's patio — done the same summer by someone faster — is a wave. Point taken.

Questions
Common questions
- Pavers or poured concrete?
- Pavers flex with ground movement and can be lifted and reset in a small area if a tree root moves something. Poured concrete is cheaper per square foot and cracks eventually. For patios we usually recommend pavers here; for a utilitarian slab, concrete is fine.
- Will weeds grow through?
- Not through a correct install for a long time. Polymeric sand locks the joints; what growth does appear later comes from seed landing on top, and it wipes out easily.
- Can you work on a sloped yard?
- Yes. Sloped sites usually mean retaining or seat walls and a real drainage plan, which we will scope during the walkthrough.
