Stucco

Stucco is an excellent cladding and an unforgiving one. It works when the assembly behind it drains and dries; it traps water and rots framing when it does not. Most of the stucco failures we are called to in this region are not stucco problems at all — they are flashing and drainage problems.

We look behind the wall before quoting a repair

A cracked stucco wall may need a patch, or it may be telling you the framing behind it is wet. We investigate before we quote, because patching over a moisture problem sells you a repair that fails and costs more the second time.

Three-coat done at the proper pace

Traditional stucco needs its scratch and brown coats to cure before the finish goes on. Rushing that is how you get map cracking across a brand-new wall. We schedule around the weather and the cure, not around the calendar.

Matching an existing finish

Texture and colour matching on a repair is genuinely difficult — sand, float technique, and age all matter. We sample onto a test board and get your sign-off before touching the wall.

  • Two other companies quoted me a patch job. This crew opened up one corner first and showed me the framing was wet — the cracking was a symptom, not the problem. It turned into a bigger project than I wanted, but they were right, and I would rather have found out from a contractor than from a home inspector in five years.

Questions

Common questions

Is stucco a bad choice in a rainy climate?
No, but it is unforgiving of bad detailing. Properly installed over a drainage plane with correct flashing at every penetration, stucco performs well here. Installed directly over sheathing with sloppy flashing, it fails — which is what gave it a poor local reputation.
What do cracks mean?
Fine hairline cracking is often just normal curing and cosmetic. Cracks that are wide, stepped, or concentrated at corners of windows can indicate movement or moisture. We will tell you which kind you have.
Can you change the colour?
Yes — a fog coat or an elastomeric finish will re-colour stucco without re-stuccoing, provided the substrate is sound.
